Challenge

The historical character
of the steelworks

The Museum of Iron Metallurgy is located in a historic building dating back to 1895 that once belonged to the Chorzów steelworks. The facility previously housed, among other functions, the power plant of the Royal Steelworks. Preserving the character of the building was a key consideration when designing the museum exhibition, allowing visitors to admire the original brick walls and historic windows.

This heritage architecture continues to create a unique and distinctive atmosphere to this day, so our goal was to preserve that impression. We faced the challenge of conveying the dynamism and power of the processes taking place within the steelworks in a way that would make visitors feel as if they were one of the plant’s employees. At the same time, the exhibition had to be adapted to ensure accessibility for visitors with disabilities and those with hearing impairments.

Effect

A museum that engages
all the senses

The Museum of Iron Metallurgy in Chorzów is a unique place where every visitor can step into the role of a steelworks employee and experience the site through multiple senses. Visitors can see authentic artefacts, hear the sounds of steel production, feel the heat of the fire, and even notice the scent of burning materials. This is all made possible by the multisensory solutions implemented throughout the museum. The display of original steelworks machinery allows visitors to appreciate the scale of the facility, while stories shared by former employees transport them back in time and evoke genuine emotions.

This is exactly what a great museum should offer, stimulating the senses, allowing visitors to become fully immersed in the world created by the curators, and enabling them to experience emotions that could never be felt by simply reading about the history of the place. That is why we are proud to have been part of the team that brought the Museum of Iron Metallurgy in Chorzów to life.
