Some railway stations take us to new destinations. Others begin a journey through history. For many years, the former railway station building on Dworcowa Street in Kowary witnessed thousands of arrivals and departures. Today, it welcomes visitors once again, inviting them to discover the history of the town, its industrial heritage and the shared story of the Polish Czech border region.
Przystanek Kowary Museum was created as part of the „Industrial Heritage and Traditions Trail” project, co funded by the Interreg Czech Republic Poland 2021 to 2027 programme. The City of Kowary wanted to create a place that would be modern, engaging and accessible to a wide range of visitors, including families, school groups and individual tourists. The museum was designed to present the history of the region in a contemporary way while preserving the authentic character of the historic building and ensuring that technology enhanced the exhibition instead of dominating it.
A+V acted as the main contractor, delivering the complete audiovisual systems and integrating multimedia into the exhibition space. Every solution was designed to naturally support the narrative and guide visitors through the history of Kowary and the Polish Czech border region. We delivered the project in close partnership with Vidifilm, which was responsible for the exhibition design, multimedia content, exhibition furniture and scenography. By combining the expertise of both teams, we created a coherent and carefully designed visitor journey.
Przystanek Kowary proves that even a small museum can tell remarkable stories. The museum is the result of many years of effort by the City of Kowary, which purchased the former railway station building from the Polish State Railways and gave it a completely new purpose. The exhibition has received an enthusiastic response from the local community. Many residents continue to contribute by donating historical objects and memorabilia connected with the town’s past. We created a space that respects the history of the building while using modern technology only where it genuinely enhances the visitor experience.
The museum has also become an important meeting place for the local community and a new destination that strengthens cooperation between Poland and the Czech Republic. This is only the beginning. The City of Kowary is already planning temporary exhibitions dedicated to the history of local sport and the work of artists connected with the town, including Józef Gielniak and Bruno Pojasek. These initiatives will continue to expand the museum’s offer and encourage visitors to return.
The renovation of the former railway station and its transformation into a museum was an important and demanding project for the city. From the very beginning, I wanted the exhibition to strike a balance between authentic exhibits and modern multimedia. I am very pleased that we were able to achieve this together. It was equally important to me that the exhibition design complemented the character of the building. I am glad that we succeeded in highlighting its unique atmosphere rather than competing with it. As the project coordinator, I particularly appreciated the openness, commitment and initiative of the A+V team.
